Liner Notes:
After the first successful concerts, it was natural to continue to work with Deborah Brown. Klüvers Big Band played with Deborah Brown in January of 1995 during the Band’s annual New Years concerts and again in the autumn of the same year, when the orchestra and Deborah Brown toured England and Wales together. During the summer of 1996, Deborah Brown performed with the Band at the jazz festivals in Aarhus and Copenhagen. The 11 tunes on this CD were recorded live during the first two sets we played together on Wednesday the 10th of July at Jazzhouse Slukefter in Tivoli and reflect Deborah Brown’s wide-ranging repertoire, with tunes that cover almost all aspects of jazz history. Swing music is represented here by tunes like “Got the Jitters” and “Centerpiece”, standards by the musical hit “My Favorite Things” and jazz standards with tunes like “Never A Care” and “Always and Forever”. Especially three of the arranges are worth noting: Brian Gaber and David Springfield are young American arrangers educated at the Eastman School of Music in New York. Ber Joris is a Belgian composer and arranger.
– Jens Klüver
Klüvers Big Band has a long tradition of performing with both Danish and foreign vocalists. Normally I establish contact with them, but in the case of Deborah Brown, things went a bit differently. In 1993, Deborah Brow contacted Klüvers Big Band expressing her wish to sing with the band. After listening to her CD, it didn’t take me long to hire her to sing with the orchestra during the Aarhus International Jazz Festival the same year. Deborah Brown is one of the greatest jazz singers of our times. Her wide-ranging repertoire has a broad appeal. Her choice of music and arrangers is consistently of a high quality, which ensure that the musicians in the band always look forward to accompanying her.
